If you are in a tall building, the most important thing is to "seek shelter," not to run.

The shaking can cause you to lose your balance and fall or fall down the stairs.

  • Find shelter under a sturdy table or near a sturdy wall.
  • Avoid large objects such as file cabinets, mirrors, or windows to prevent hazards falling.
  • If there is no table or shelter available, crouch against a wall and use your arms to protect your head.
  • After the shaking stops or begins to subside,
  • Investigate escape routes and evacuate the building quickly.
  • Check for nearby people who need help. If you see an injured person, notify them to help evacuate.
  • Never use the elevator.
If you are in an open area,
  • Stay away from tall buildings, large trees, or utility poles.
